Bernie has been at Duke for over 25 years, starting out first doing research in Pediatric Pulmonary on Cystic Fibrosis, COPD and Environmental lung insult. He then transitioned to Pediatric Allergy and Immunology where he oversaw the lab of Dr. John Sleasman and studied adolescents with HIV, normal babies' vaccine responses and primary immune deficiency patients. In May 2023, he transitioned to being the Director of Administration and Research Development for the Duke University Population Research Institute. He joined the Moffitt-Caspi team part-time in January 2026.
